The Highlands Street Fair

This Saturday, June 20th is, what I think, the best street fair in Denver-the Highlands Street Fair. The Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. There are always interesting booths, great food and, of course, cold beer. ExpecTees will have a booth located between Meade Street and Newton Street. My Vision for ExpecTees Maternity

I have a vision of where ExpecTees Maternity will go in the future. I want to create a fashion-forward line of shirts that have designs so hip that even someone that is not pregnant will want to wear. Maternity clothes are a hard thing-you need them, you want to look good in them(especially when you don't always feel good), and you don't want to take out a second mortgage to pay for them. Insert ExpecTees Maternity. Our shirts are high-quality and affordable-they will last from the time a woman finds out she is pregnant until long after the baby weight is gone. Now, I want designs that will do the same-a truly transitional maternity shirt that can be worn at any stage. The novelty line of shirts that we currently have are great, but creating the transitional line of shirts, especially in these tough economic times is where I see ExpecTees' future.

Through the eyes of a child

I watch my 3 year old son in amazement some days. His sole goal for the day is to have fun. He does everything a 3 year old can to just enjoy his day. The trait I like the most is how quickly he gets over things. He doesn't hold grudges, he doesn't remind someone of their bad behavior, he just moves on and looks for the next fun thing to do. What if the rest of us could get so mad at someone that you are red in the face, screaming, possibly even laying on the floor kicking, then five minutes later ask that same person if they want to play? What a great world we would live in if we could all see the world like a 3 year old-express your feelings 100% whether thats happiness, anger or sadness, then just move on and don't look back? Something to think about.

Starting a business

Starting a business is hard...to say the least. I started ExpecTees Maternity 3 years ago with a good friend. In three years time, we've had lots of great ideas, gotten reps in LA, sold our shirts around the country, and I think bult a good reputation for ourselves, but its still not enough. This business is a good one-I really believe that. We have a quality product, something that is fun, easy to wear and lasts throughout an entire pregnancy, but getting the word out about ExpecTees is tough. I recently made the decision to take the business entirely online and I don't regret it, I just have a big learning curve on getting people to my site. I need people talking about our shirts-anywhere and everywhere online. So, Twitter, Facebook, Pregnancy and Mom websites and I are all becoming fast friends. Now, I just need to see sales come from my new "friends."

Summer Time is here

OK-I have to admit it, I am not a big fan of summer! I don't like to be hot! Sounds silly, I know, but its true. In theory, summer is great-backyard bbq's, lots of time at the pool, summer concerts and festivals, etc. If we could just have all that in weather no hotter than 80 degrees-I'm in! Its those days that get to 95-100 degrees that I don't like. I'm trying to get over it since I have 3 months of that weather coming, but inside I'll be willing Fall to get here as fast as it can. I do enjoy sitting on my back patio, having dinner with my family, and watching my boys play in the backyard, but I don't enjoy doing it with sweat rolling down my back. Yuck!
The summer that I was pregnant with my oldest was the hottest August on record-it was miserable. My heart goes out to every pregnant woman due in August-being pregnant is hard enough, but add 100 degree days to it and some days can be downright miserable. To those women I say Hang in there-its all worth it in the end!
So, I'm going to try very hard to enjoy this summer, even that crazy heat....I'm not making any promises, but I'll try.

Mother's day is this Sunday. For the first time in about 6 years, I will be with my mom on Mother's Day. Now that I am a mom, I appreciate my mom and all she did for my brother and I even more than I did growing up.
Being a mom is a job that never stops. It doesn't matter how old your kids are, how far away you are from them, or what you have going on in your life-Mom's never stop thinking/worrying and wondering about their children.
My mom taught me the importance of being a good person, laughing as much as you can in a day and to show respect to everyone you meet. I hope I can teach my boys those same lessons.
So, on Sunday, call, write, email or hug your mom. She deserves a few minutes of recognition for all that time spent being your mom.

Rainy Days

Rainy days come in many different forms. Today is literally a rainy day in Denver and my oldest son is sick. These are the days when I have to really dig in as a mom and find ways to entertain the boys without leaving the house or leaving the tv on all day.
Other rainy days are more a figure of speech. Some friends of mine are going thru some rainy days right now. While we all have hard times, its hardest to feel helpless with ones you love. You have no choice but to wait out the rain and know that the sun is coming back.
What do you do on your rainy days? I prefer to think about all the good things I have in my life and hug my boys even more than I do on a sunny day.
Here's to many sunny days ahead for all of us!

Today is Earth Day. Please, please, please do one thing that you normally wouldn't do to help out. Unplug some appliances at your house, recycle, ride your bike or walk to wherever you need to go-just do something! Be an example for your kids, let them help you take the recycling out, teach them to turn off the lights in their room when they aren't in there. I want my boys to have the best world possible to grow up in and if we all do a little bit, that will be possible!

Super Mom

I've been a stay-at-home mom for 3 1/2 years now. Occasionally, a day happens where I have to admit, I feel like Super Mom. Yesterday was one of those days. By 9:30 in the morning, I had made and cleaned up breakfast, had both boys dressed and the youngest down for a nap. I had made two pots of minestrone soup-one for a friend and one for our dinner and packaged up 15 press kits. I love days like that!
Being a mom has meant everything to me, but its also been very hard. I put a lot of pressure on myself to keep the house completely clean, the laundry done, prepare healthy good meals (3 times a day no less) and it isn't easy. As time goes by, I'm starting to learn that being Super Mom really means stopping and sitting on the floor to play cars with my boys, or reading a book over and over until they finally tire of it.
So, on days like yesterday, as good as it felt to take my "to-do" list for 15 to 5 before 10:00 a.m., it felt better to read an Elmo book for the hundredth time to my son before his nap.

ExpecTees Maternity was started for two reasons:

1) for fun

2) for quality, affordable maternity clothes.

I've been pregnant twice and loved it both times. Did I love every minute of it? No way! But, I did have fun watching my body change, feeling my sons move and seeing other people's reactions to pregnancy.

Our shirts not only bring a smile to a pregnant woman's face, but to people she interacts with. On those days when you are pregnant and don't feel well, your feet hurt or you just want your body back, putting on an ExpecTees shirt can be the trick. People will smile, laugh, some will even stop you to comment on the shirt. Thats why we started the business.

Money Comes and Goes

Yes, I just quoted a television show, but I can't tell you how much that one line just summed up my life right now. My husband and I have been raising our two boys on one salary for almost 4 years now. We've seen more money go, then come, but we've also had the overwhelming joy and amazement of watching our boys grow in to happy, funny and sweet children. Being in the worst economy in decades isn't easy on any of us, but there is still so much to be grateful for and take to take pleasure in. These kids of ours are a "one-shot deal" so we've chosen to focus on them and making them the best citizens/friends/brothers/nephews/grandchildren and sons they can be. How lucky are we?

Hopscotch Hustle this Sunday

ExpecTees is proud to be part of the Hopscotch Hustle on Sunday, April 5th.

Hopscotch Hustle Fashion Show-Hip moms, expecting moms, baby-wearing and nursing moms will hit the runway along with cool tots. There will also be a silent auction, unique local vendors, fancy carnival fare for young and old, games and a performance by the kid-friendly hip-hop sensation Littleleague. Proceeds benefit WeeCycle, providing low-income families in the Denver metro area with new and gently-used baby gear for free.

WHEN: April 5, 2-5pm.

WHERE: The Curtis Hotel, 1405 Curtis St. COST: $15 for general admission, $35 for premium seating with a goody bag.

Like Riding a Bike

Of all the wonderful things Carrie has introduced me to; “blogging” has to be one of the most technically advanced concepts to date. As I embark on this, my initial entry into the blogging world, I am filled with the mix of fear and excitement usually reserved for a small child learning to ride a bike for the first time. Lucky for you, you get to fall off the bike and bruise your literary knees right along with me.

So, what should I be ‘blogging’ about?

My brother-in-law, Dave Dugdale, is a blogging pro. Everyday from January through December, Dave hammers away at his computer turning the internet into his own financial and educational playground. Being a seeker of knowledge, I asked my brother-in-law, what do you blog about? Dave’s response: everything.

Perfect, that narrows it down. If ‘everything’ is my subject matter, you are in for the ride of your life. I hope you brought a helmet. I love ‘everything’, and I think it would make an excellent topic for my first entry into the world of blogging, but who has that kind of time? So for now, I’ll have to choose something from everything, and take this opportunity to tell you about a few topics I plan to blog about in the future.

Future topics will include: financial news, politics, travel tips, country music, concert reviews, drinking, hunting, fishing, gambling, vacations, compliments and complaints, sports, fantasy football advice, kids (yes, I love them too), marriage, golf, iTunes, food, folks, and fun.

Come to think of it – this blogging thing is exactly like learning to ride a bike. The first time I got on, I didn’t have a destination in mind, I pedaled in the direction I was pushed, and at the end I fell off unexpectedly. Take heart, with ‘everything’ as my topic, I plan to get back on this bike again very soon. I hope you’ll continue to join me.

Its our first blog post! ExpecTees Maternity is a Denver, CO based maternity t-shirt business. We have 15 designs in our novelty t-shirt line and 3 in our new transitional line. Our shirts fit from the time a woman finds out she is pregnant until the baby weight is gone. With 18 designs and more to come, there is something for everyone!

Our blog will the place to learn more about business, ie-deals, upcoming events, new designs and any other exciting news we want to share. Its also going to be the place for our occasional random, but I'm sure important, deep thoughts.
